Issue

V-79-57344-38748 -Backup exec was unable to prepare exchange resources for granular Recovery Technology (GRT) operations. Therefore you will be unable to perform GRT-enabled restores of Microsoft Exchange data from this backup for '\\virtua-machine.domain.local\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group

Error

Error in Backup Exec 2010 -

Backup- VMVCB::\\ESXHOST\VCGuestVm\vCenter\vm\VM NAME
Error. Cannot backup directory \zzzVirtApp000zzz and its subdirectories.

Error or Exception in Backup Exec 2012 -

Job log shows the following error:

Therefore you will be unable to perform GRT-enabled restores of Microsoft Exchange data from this backup for '\\virtua-machine.domain.local\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group

With SGMON running and the tools --> Settings --> Agents --> Exchange GRT option activated activated and AVVI debugging options activated as specified in technote TECH63926 the following error messages can be seen in the SGMON (and/or the local remote agent BEREMOTE) logs. Environment

Exchange, Active Directory, or SQL applications installed in a virtual machine in a Hyper-v or ESX enviroment. The application GRT option are selected for the job.  The Windows volumes where the databases reside are configured as GPT.

Cause

GPT volumes are not supported for application GRT as Specified in the Backup Exec Software compatibility list (SCL) up to version 2012. To check whether the volumes are GPT the following commands should be executed from the Windows command line interface.

>DISKPART

DISKPART>LIST DISK

The column named "Gpt" will show if the disk is configured as GPT or not. (and asterik appears in this colunm for the affected disk)

NOTE: This error can also occur if the disks are iSCSI disks that reside outside of the VM.

Solution

  • If viable and Application GRT is needed the disk should be converted to MBR as opposed to GPT.
  • Disable the user of GRT on the backup by disabling the GRT option from backup job properties.
  • If the disks are iSCSI than to fully protect virtual machines in this configuration a Remote Agent (RAWS) will need to be installed and then backup via Remote Agent instead of Virtual Agent (AVVI or Hyper-V)
