Issue

The FLDR media created by the backup job targeted to a RDX drive may show up under 'Backup Exec and Windows NT' media set OR a custom media set

Environment

Backup Exec 2012 installed on any supported Operating System and backup jobs are being run to a Removable Disk Storage Folder on RDX drive.

The issue has been reported using RDX1000 drive but could be encountered with other RDX drives.

Solution

1. The media set to which the FLDR cartridge belongs is not indicative of the retention period /media set of the backups sets residing on the cartridge.

2. Each backup file/folder (BKF/IMG) is assigned to a media set when the backup occurs according to the user defined settings in the job. The media set that the BKF/IMG media's belong will decide its retention period.

3. The FLDR Media may show up under 'Backup Exec and Windows NT' media set OR a custom media set as per job configuration but it will not influence the retention of a backup set and hence media recycling is not impacted by this behavior. The backup sets will expire as per the properties set in the media set and this can be confirmed by going in the properties of the RDX drive on the Storage tab and then checking the Expiration date for the backup sets.
