Unexpected *.STG or *.DAT attachments appear in Emails delivered through the Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG)

Users are receiving Emails with unexpected *.STG or *.DAT attachments when an Email is delivered through the Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG).  You woud like to know if the SMG  is adding these attachments to these messages.


Cause



The Symantec Messaging Gateway is not responsible for these additional files appearing in the Emails it receives and delivers.


Solution



This behaviour is commonly seen when a sender's Email client is incorrectly constructing a message.  When the Symantec Messaging Gateway and the recipient receives the Email, certain components of the Email may appear in a *.DAT  or *.STG attachment.  

The Symantec Messaging Gateway is not at fault and the issue should be followed up on the sender's side.
