Restores of Windows 7 machines fail at 99% ('An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist').

Problem
Restore Anyware, using the Symantec System Recovery (SSR) recovery disk (SRD), of Windows 7 fails at 99% with the error shown below (Figure 1).

Error EBAB03EE: Operating System API 2,017 failed.
Error 000003F0: An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist.

Cause
The issue is seen when the source machine does not contain the 'default' entry in the Windows Boot Manager section of the BCD. This can be verified by using the BCDEDIT command on the source machine.

Solution
NOTE: It has been observed that the machine will boot successfully following the restore despite the error at 99%.
This issue is fixed in Symantec System Recovery (SSR) 2013. The statement below regarding a 'supported hotfix' only applies to SSR 2011.
A supported hotfix has been made available for this issue. Please contact Symantec Technical Support to obtain this fix. This hotfix has not yet gone through any extensive Q&A testing. Consequently, if you are not adversely affected by this problem and have a satisfactory temporary workaround in place, we recommend that you wait for the public release of this hotfix.
