Issue



When trying to run a utility cleaning job the following error may be encountered: Final error: 0xe0008234 - Library Error - attempt to clean a drive in a library with expired or bad cleaning media.


Error




Cause



Backup Exec 2012 could not run cleaning jobs more than 20 times even if the cleaning medium supported cleaning count more than 20 times because Backup Exec 2012 could not configure the maximum number of cleanings for a cleaning slot.

 


Solution



This issue is resolved in Backup Exec 2014 or later versions. 

Note: Backup Exec 2014 is new able to configure the maximum number of cleanings for a cleaning slot. The maximum number of cleanings is 20 by default.
 
To resolve this issue and receive the new Backup Exec improvements please upgrade to the current version of Backup Exec
 
NOTE:   Symantec continues to focus on the current release and future releases, there are no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in earlier versions of the software at the present time. WORKAROUND (Backup Exec 2012)

Navigate to 'All Media' under the storage tab of the console. Located and delete the cleaning media. Insert the new cleaning tape into the library or drive and inventory it. (See Note.) Then run or schedule the cleaning job.

Note: If the slot is configured as a cleaning slot, inventory is grayed out, therefore run the scan.
