Restore of individual files/docs from GRT Sharepoint backup is successful with 0 bytes restored

Problem
From a successful SharePoint 2010 GRT backup, one or more documents or files from the content database are selected to restore. This restore job can be set to restore documents to their original location or redirect the restore to a file location. The restore job will run to completion successfully but no files will be restored:

Processed 0 bytes in 1 second.
Throughput rate: 0.000 MB/min
If the restore job is set to redirect to a file location, the folder structure will be created in the target location but no files will be restored.

Solution
