Best practices when receiving Email Alerts for BBU failure on specific adapter

There is some confusion as to when customers should take care of a Battery Backup Unit (BBU) failure or to ignore the error message. This technote clarifies the best practices for handling a BBU failure messages.

Cause



Customers need to know when a BBU failure message should be handled or can be ignored.


Solution



Note:

Warning below are examples only, do not assume that the Adapter numbers will always be the same. They can be different depending on boot sequence. Always verify, from the Adp-Log_<date>_xxxx.log, which model of RAID controller belongs to which Adapter first. 

Example, if an error message shows this Model and Adapter then its still valid. This would be the external RAID controller card.

"ADAPTER 2 Adapter model : Intel (R) RAID Controller RS2PI008"

In both of the below cases, embedded RAID 1 controller at either adapter 1 or adapter 2 does not have a BBU unit so any failure message involving embedded RAID 1 controller would be a false message.

Scenario Example #1:

A NetBackup 5220 appliance with no storage shelf attached would have an internal RAID 6 controller (Model: Integrated Intel(R) RAID Controller SROMBSASMP2) and labeled Adapter 0. Also the appliance would have an embedded RAID 1 controller (Model: Intel Embedded Server RAID Technology II) and labeled Adapter 1.

      ADP Log example:
      1) 5220 without storage shelf attached:
     
         Adapter #0
         ==============================================================================

Examples:
Output from an 5220 appliance without Symantec Storage Shelf attached:

BBU status for Adapter: 0

.......

Relative State of Charge: 95 %
Charger System State: 49168
Charger System Ctrl: 0
Charging current: 0 mA
Absolute state of charge: 48 %
Max Error: 2 %


Adapter 1: Get BBU Status Failed.
 

Scenario Example #2:

A Netbackup 5220 appliance with a storage shelf attached would have an internal RAID 6 controller (Model: Integrated Intel(R) RAID Controller SROMBSASMP2) and an external RAID 6 controller card (Model: Intel (R) RAID Controller RS2PI008). The external RAID controller card model would be labeled "Adapter 0" but the internal RAID 6 controller would be labeled "Adapter 1". The embedded RAID 1 controller would be labeled "Adapter 2".

      ADP Log example:
      1) 5220 with storage shelf attached:

BBU status for Adapter: 1

Max Error: 2 %


Adapter 2: Get BBU Status Failed.
 

So, if 'Get BBU Status Failed' message is reported against the adapter where the embedded RAID 1 controller is attached (whether it be adapter 1 when there is no storage shelf attached, or adapter 2 when the storage shelf is attached), the error can be ignored.

All other failures against the BBU should be investigated further.

For example, if BBU status failure message is reported against -
1) Adapter 0 (Model: Intel(R) RAID Controller SROMBSASMP2), when there is no storage shelf attached to the appliance.

   or

2) Adapter 0 (Model: Intel (R) RAID Controller RS2PI008) or Adapter 1 (Model: Intel(R) RAID Controller SROMBSASMP2), when the storage shelf is attached

These would be examples of failures that should be investigated further and replaced if needed. If BBU unit replacement is required, then SYMC support engineers would open service call with SYMC hardware provider to replace the BBU.

The following two things also help to identify whether BBU is present for a specific adapter or not and thus to decide whether an error message discussed above should be taken care of or ignored:

1. Output of the following command:

/opt/MegaRAID/MegaCli # ./MegaCli64 -cfgdsply -aAll

Example (from a 5220 appliance without Storage Shelf connected):

Adapter: 0
Product Name: Intel(R) RAID Controller SROMBSASMP2
BBU: Present
 

Adapter: 1
Product Name: Intel Embedded Server RAID Technology II
BBU: Absent
 

2. 'RAID-RS2PI008-CfgDsply_2012.10.22_09:52:44.log' of DataCollect logs

Example (from a 5220 appliance with a Storage Shelf connected):

Adapter: 0
Product Name: Intel (R) RAID Controller RS2PI008
BBU: Present
 

Adapter: 1
Product Name: Intel(R) RAID Controller SROMBSASMP2
BBU: Present
 

Adapter: 2
Product Name: Intel Embedded Server RAID Technology II
Memory: 1MB
BBU: Absent
 

Note: we are targeting to fix the above problem (not to report a failure where the BBU does not exist for an adapter) appliance version 3.0
