Problem



Hyper-V GRT  backup of a virtual machine hosting SQL instances reports Backup Exec was unable to prepare Microsoft SQL resources for Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) operations.

 


Error



Backup Exec was unable to prepare Microsoft SQL resources for Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) operations. Therefore you will be unable to perform GRT-enabled restores of Microsoft SQL data for "virtual machine" from this backup.


V-79-57344-38749 - Backup Exec was unable to prepare Microsoft SQL resources for Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) operations.  Therefore you will be unable to perform GRT-enabled restores of Microsoft SQL data for 'VMNAME\SQLINSTANCE' from this backup.

Cause



 

Virtual Machine Guest contain GPT volumes/disk.  SQL Database are located on the GPT volume/disk.

Application GRT against GPT volumes with Hyper-V Agent completes with exceptions.

 


Solution



When using Agent for Microsoft Hyper-V Backup Exec's Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) does not support virtual machines that use dynamic disks, such as spanned, mirrored, striped, or RAID 5 disks.

WORKAROUND:

Perform a Remote Agent (RAWS) backup of the guest virtual machine.
