Issue

Hyper-V GRT  backup of a virtual machine hosting SQL instances reports the following error.

Application GRT against GPT volumes with Hyper-V Agent completes with exceptions.

Error

Backup Exec was unable to prepare Microsoft SQL resources for Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) operations. Therefore you will be unable to perform GRT-enabled restores of Microsoft SQL data for "virtual machine" from this backup.

V-79-57344-38749 - Backup Exec was unable to prepare Microsoft SQL resources for Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) operations.  Therefore you will be unable to perform GRT-enabled restores of Microsoft SQL data for 'VMNAME\SQLINSTANCE' from this backup.

Environment

Backup Exec 2012

Hyper-V Agent

Virtual Machines with SQL instances

Cause

Virtual Machine Guest contains GPT volumes/disk. SQL Database are located on the GPT volume/disk.

Solution

In Backup Exec 2010 and prior versions, Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) for Agent for Microsoft Hyper-V did not support virtual machines that use dynamic disks, such as spanned, mirrored, striped, or RAID 5 disks.

Support for GRT backups for GPT volume/disk has been added only for 'Backup Exec Agent for Hyper-V' to Backup Exec 2012 with Service Pack 2.
