Issue

A job to duplicate data between two Data Domain appliances is taking much longer than expected and it does not appear that the duplicate job is using optimized duplication for the job

Cause

This can be caused by an incorrect setting in the registry

Solution

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

Check the setting for the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Misc\EnableOptimizedDuplicationDataDomain setting in the registry.  If this is set to 0 (zero) or does not exist, then optimized duplication will not be used.  Change this setting to 1 to enable optimized duplication.

This registry key is created by the DataDomain OST plugin installer.  If this registry key does not exist, that may be an indication that the plugin was installed manually without running the installer.  Either run the Data Domain OST plugin installer, or create this registry key with a type of DWORD and a value of 1.

Note that the default setting for this registry key is 1 (enabled).
