Issue

Altiris was connected to a database on a back-end network and NAT was used to connect to the SQL server. During upgrade of SIM when specifying database details the upgrade failed and connection to database was lost.

The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

Environment

Windows Server 2008 R2

SQL  Server 2008

SMP 7.1.2

Cause

The SQL server was located on a back-end network and NAT was used to translate the front-end IP address. The front-end IP address must have previously been cached on the NS server but was cleared during the SIM upgrade whilst specifying DB details. This was confirmed by using a .udl file for testing on the NS - the NS server could connect to the SQL server using the front-end IP address but not the SQL name.

Solution

Add front-end IP address of SQL server to hosts file on SMP server
