Backup of a virtual machine may fail with the error virtualmachine.vmdk is corrupt

Technical Solution


Problem



During a backup of a virtual machine with the Agent for VMware, the backup may fail with the errors below.


Error



Job Log Error:
Verify- VMVCB::\\vCenter\VCGuestVm\(DC)DATACENTER(DC)\vm\PATH\TO\VIRTUALMACHINE
Data for VMVCB::\\vCenter\VCGuestVm\(DC)DATACENTER(DC)\vm\PATH\TO\VIRTUALMACHINE\virtualdisk.vmdk is corrupt.

If debugging is enabled, the beremote debug log on the media server will show the following error:
[fsys\shared]        - VDDK-Log: DISKLIB-SPARSE: "\\B2D LOCATION\IMG00####\virtualdisk.vmdk" : failed to open (14): Disk needs repair.
[fsys\shared]        - VDDK-Log: DISKLIB-LINK  : "\\B2D LOCATION\IMG00####\virtualdisk.vmdk" : failed to open (The specified virtual disk needs repair).
[fsys\shared]        - VDDK-Log: DISKLIB-CHAIN : "\\B2D LOCATION\IMG00####\virtualdisk.vmdk" : failed to open (The specified virtual disk needs repair).


Solution

This issue is currently under investigation by Symantec Corporation. Pending the outcome of the investigation, this issue may be resolved by way of a patch or hotfix in current or future revisions of the software.
