Issue



VMware virtual machine restored from an incremental backup set fails if Full and Incremental backup has been performed on different storage devices.

The following is an example of the different type of devices, but not limited to.

  • Full backups are targeted to a tape device.
  • Incremental backups are targeted to a disk storage device.

The restore job completed successfully and restores only the incremental set when incremental backup set is selected in the restore job 


Cause



This issue will come up if full and incremental backup sets are on different storage devices, e.g. Full backup on Tape and Incremental backups on B2D device


Solution



A hotfix is now available for this issue in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned in this article. Refer to the Hotfix link under Related Documents at the end of this article to obtain the hotfix needed to resolve the issue.

Backup Exec 2012 Rev 1798 Service Pack 3 (TECH205351).

Backup Exec 2010 R3 Rev 5204 Service Pack 4 (TECH208828).

 

Note:

Backup Exec 2012 SP3 and BE 2010 R3 SP4 now supports the mixed type of media mentioned above when Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) is NOT used.

The mixed type of media is not supported when GRT is used.
