Issue

At NetBackup versions version 7.5.0.3 or 7.5.0.4, the bpexpdate -deassignempty command will return a status code 97 (requested media id is in use, cannot process request) when a media is in use.  Earlier versions would skip the media that were in use versus returning the error.

Error

When this occurs, the admin log file will show a status 97.

Example: admin log bpexpdate start:

15:25:20.312 [3948.5804] <2> bpexpdate: VERBOSE = 5
15:25:20.312 [3948.5804] <2> logparams: -deassignempty -force

A short time later, the error:

15:25:20.437 [3948.5804] <4> emmlib_DeleteEmptyMedia: (0) changeMediaDBDeleteEmptyMedia returned 2001049
15:25:20.437 [3948.5804] <16> check_for_empty_media: (-) Translating EMM_ERROR_MediaAllocated(2001049) to 97 in the NetBackup context
15:25:20.437 [3948.5804] <4> check_for_empty_media: Could not build list of media, requested media id is in use, cannot process request
15:25:20.453 [3948.5804] <2> main: EXIT STATUS 97: requested media id is in use, cannot process request

Environment

NetBackup versions impacted:

  • 7.5.0.3
  • 7.5.0.4

Cause

A defect in the NetBackup code will cause the query to nbemm to exit out when a media is found to be in use, versus skipping it.

Solution

The formal resolution for this issue (Etrack 2921910) is included in the following release:

  • NetBackup 7.5 Maintenance Release 5 (7.5.0.5)

NetBackup 7.5.0.5 is now available - please access the Related Article below for more information.

Please note that Symantec Corporation reserves the right to remove any fix from the targeted release if it does not pass quality assurance tests or introduces new risks to overall code stability.  Symantec's plans are subject to change and any action taken by you based on the above information or your reliance upon the above information is made at your own risk.  Please refer to the maintenance release readme or contact NetBackup Enterprise Support to confirm this issue (ET2921910) was included in the maintenance release.

Workaround:
Rerunning bpexpdate -deassignempty -force while the media are not in use will allow the command to function.

If this workaround is unfeasible, an Emergency Engineering Binary (EEB) replacement for bpexpdate containing a fix for this issue is available for NetBackup 7.5.0.4 by contacting Symantec technical support, referencing this document ID and Etrack 2990106
