Technical Solution

After installing SAV for Linux (SAVFL) either MR 13 or MR 14 on Ubuntu Desktop 12.10, 12.04, 11.10, the savtray icon does not appear.  Prior to this everything works fine. Tested kernel on the latest version is 3.0.0-22-generic-pae.

Ubuntu Server editions are also affected.

No error message appears.  The tray icon is completely missing, though SAVFL is listed as an installed product.  Pop-up notifications for Auto-Protect notifications appear correctly.

An additional step is needed on Unity to add SAVFL's GUI to the systray whitelist.

From the readme.txt:

Unity Panel Icon missing in Ubuntu 11.x (and later) desktop

In 11.x Ubuntu, after the savui deb package installed, if the tray icon of it missed on Unity panel, please execute the following command lines on a desktop terminal with the user account you login desktop system:

 systraywhitelist=`gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist`

 echo $systraywhitelist

if the output includes "Savtray" string, then re-login desktop system, if not, execute the command line:

 systraywhitelist=`echo $systraywhitelist | sed "s/, 'Savtray'//g"`

 systraywhitelist="${systraywhitelist%]}, 'Savtray']"

 gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "$systraywhitelist"

then re-login desktop system.

 Following those steps will cause the GUI to display.
