Verification of a virtual machine backed up during a VMware backup fails with "Unable to open a disk of the virtual machine."

Problem



During a verification of a virtual machine that was backed up during a VMware backup, the job may fail with the error below.


Error



Error             : e0009585 - Unable to open a disk of the virtual machine.

The debug log will show:
[fsys\shared] - VDDK-Log: DISKLIB-DSCPTR: DescriptorDetermineType: failed to open 'X:\PATH_TO_BACKUP_LOCATION.vmdk': Failed to lock the file (400000003)
[fsys\shared] - VDDK-Log: DISKLIB-LINK : "X:\PATH_TO_BACKUP_LOCATION.vmdk" : failed to open (Failed to lock the file).
[fsys\shared] - VDDK-Log: DISKLIB-CHAIN : "X:\PATH_TO_BACKUP_LOCATION.vmdk" : failed to open (Failed to lock the file).
[fsys\shared] - VDDK-Log: DISKLIB-LIB : Failed to open 'X:\PATH_TO_BACKUP_LOCATION.vmdk' with flags 0x1a Failed to lock the file (16392).
[fsys\vmvcb\pdi] - Could not open the local disk X:\PATH_TO_BACKUP_LOCATION.vmdk. Error Text: 'The file is already in use' Error: '70403103916047'
[ndmp\loops]         - Unswitched return from FS_ReadObj() = 0xe0009585


Solution
