Issue



VMware tools services fail to start properly after some of the Symantec Encryption Management Server PUP updates. Any of the PUP updates that modify the Kernel will cause VMware tools services to not start properly.

Environment



This document applies to PGP Universal Servers version 3.2.x and Symantec Encryption Management Servers 3.3.x and above. Running Native VMware tools on ESX/ESXi


Solution



After the PUP update if you find that VMware Tools services are failing at startup.

  1. Log into the Server via SSH.
  2. At the command prompt enter this command to reconfigure VMware Tools and accept the default settings: vmware-config-tools.pl -d
  3. Reboot the server and check that VMware Tools loads successfully.
