How to remedy a failed uninstall of VERITAS Volume Manager (tm) 3.x for Windows 2000 with a hotfix

Solution

Incorrectly uninstalling Volume Manager may leave the system in a state where Volume Manager can neither be uninstalled nor re-installed. This document outlines the specific steps that must be taken to reassemble VERITAS Volume Manager for Windows 2000 with a hotfix. This is done for the purpose of correctly uninstalling the product. See the Related Documents portion of this document for links on how to correctly uninstall Volume Manager.

The original installation media must be available to complete this procedure, i.e. either the product CD or the extracted files from a download. Once these have been located, follow these steps to rebuild the Volume Manager installation:

1. Locate the "VIP" folder within the installation media. The default location is "\VIP".
2. Double-click on the folder to explore the contents. Two msi packages are located within, VRTSobgui.msi (VERITAS Enterprise Administrator) and VRTSob.msi (VERITAS Enterprise Administrator Service).
3. Double-click on the VRTSob.msi file. An installation wizard will launch (Figure 1).

4. Click NEXT
5. In the Customer Information window, click NEXT. A Setup Type window will display (Figure 2).

6. Choose the COMPLETE radio button as setup type, then click the NEXT button (Figure 2)
7. Click on INSTALL. This will load the Enterprise Administrator service.
8. When done, click FINISH
9. Again, locate the "VIP" folder and explore it
10. Double Click on the VRTSobgui.msi file. The install shield wizard for VEA will launch.
11. Click NEXT
12. In the Customer Information window, click NEXT. A Setup Type window will display.
13. Choose the COMPLETE radio button as setup type, then click the NEXT button.
14. Click on INSTALL. This will load the VERITAS Enterprise Administrator.
15. When complete, click FINISH

The system is now configured to a point that allows Volume Manager to be correctly uninstalled.
Note: The instructions and images given above are for a VERITAS Volume Manager 3.0 installation. Later versions are similar.
