Problem
Backup of a virtual machine fails with an error indicating there is something wrong with the power state of the machine.

Error: 0xe00095a3 - The operation failed because the virtual center or ESX server reported that the operation cannot be performed in the current power state of the virtual machine.

Solution
If this error is returned, attempt to power off the virtual machine causing the error and then power it back on and attempt another backup operation.
If this does not resolve the error, VmWare support will need to be contacted for further assistance. This is especially true if attempts to shut down, log into, reset or take snapshots of the virtual machine are also failing.
