Unable to Set Up Avira Antivirus Premium 2012 with Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3

When attempting to install Avira AntiVirus Premium on a system with Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3 installed, you receive the following error:

The installation of the LSP failed. Mail Protection and Web Protection therefore cannot be installed...


 

Note: This article applies to versions of Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.0.

 


Solution



Scenario 1:

1. Installing Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3 is successful and PGP Messaging can encrypt and decrypt email messages.
2. Install Avira AntiVirus, the following error message is displayed:

The installation of the LSP failed. Mail Protection and Web Protection therefore cannot be installed...

3. Click OK and continue with the installation. Avira Antivirus is installed successfully but Mail protection and Web Protection features will be absent.
4. Try to send and receive encrypted emails - PGP Messaging will be able to process encrypted emails


By clicking OK you can continue the installation on Avira AntiVirus, but the Mail Protection and Web Protection components are not installed. After Avira is installed, Symantec Encryption Desktop can process encrypted email messages over SMTP/POP/IMAP.


Scenario 2:

1. Install Avira Antivirus - installation is successful and Web Protection and Mail Protection features are enabled.
2. Install Symantec Encryption Desktop - Installation is successful.
3. Try to send and receive encrypted emails - PGP Messaging will not be able to process encrypted email i.e. PGP Messaging will send the email messages in the clear and is also be unable to decrypt encrypted messages.
4. Check Avira Mail Protection and Web Protection features - They function as expected.


You can then use Symantec Encryption Desktop for mail encryption, but the Mail Protection and Web Protection from Avira will be deactivated due to the fact that the LSP of Symantec Encryption Desktop is installed.

This issue is fixed in the following release:

Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.2
