Issue



When editing or deleting Backup Exec (BE) Archive Option Archive Settings you receive error 'Unable to delete the File System Archive Settings:  Arhive settings cannot be deleted because they are used by one or more file system folders'

This will also happen when creating a backup and archive job

'Unable to create the archive items: submitted archive selection overlaps with existing archive selections'

Environment



Backup Exec 2012


Cause



After a migration to 2012 or the deleting of file system archive selections list; the selections list is migrated or duplicated and was not fully removed from the file system archive selections within BEDB


Solution



Reset the File System Archive selections (WARNING: this will remove ALL Enterprise Vault and Archive Option selection lists)

  • Stop the BE and SQL BKUPEXEC instance services, and close BE console
  • Go to the BE install directory and copy the Data folder to a safe location (Default:  C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data)
  • Start BE service and SQL BKUPEXEC instance
  • Go to the install directory (Default:  C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec) and open BEUTIL.exe
  • Select All Backup Exec Servers from the middle pane of BEUTIL
  • Click on the media server name in the right pane
  • On the left pane, scroll down until you see "Archiving Option Tasks"
  • Select Reset file system archive selections
  • Open BE console and create your new archive selection and job
