Problem
When using Asset Management or CMDB Solution, such as trying to use a "picker window", a browser window pops up, showing a script error that is the same or similar to "An error has occurred in the script on this page."
Cause
Required Symantec/Altiris ActiveX controls are not loaded in Internet Explorer.
Solution
Enable or reinstall the required Symantec/Altiris ActiveX controls onto the workstation. If this is happening on all workstations, then it's likely that a GPO is the cause, preventing users from running and/or installing these ActiveX controls. Check with your network administrator if his is suspected to be the cause to have them permit Symantec/Altiris ActiveX controls. For example, a key ActiveX control is "ConsoleUtilities Class".
Depending on the version of Internet Explorer being used, instructions for viewing ActiveX controls, and what their names are, varies. The following instructions describe how to check these using Internet Explorer version 8:
- In IE8, click on the Tools menu > Internet Options.
- Click on the Programs tab.
- Click on the "Manage add-ons" button.
- In the Show drop down list, click on it and choose "All add-ons".
- There should be around three or more ActiveX components from Symantec/Altiris installed and running. This will vary depending on what the user has done so far on the console. These are also workstation-specific, and may or may not be loaded on other computers that use Altiris. These can be:
* AeXMenuCtrl Class from Altiris, Inc.
* ComponentOne FlexGrid 8 (UNICODE Light) from ComponentOne
*ConsoleUtilities Class from Symantec Corporation (This control is very important to have loaded for Asset Management and CMDB, which may be the sole issue if it is not loaded and running.)
- For any that are disabled, right click on them and choose Enable.
- When finished, click on the Close button.
- Click on the OK button to accept the changes.
- Close and restart the browser, then try to reproduce the script error.
Also, ActiveX controls also require at least a Power User level permissions for the logged in user to install and use them. If the user is not, this is insufficient to use the Symantec Management Platform. Also then, contact your network administrator to increase your user permissions to at least be a Power User. If the user later has their permissions increased, and assuming that a GPO is not preventing ActiveX controls from being installed or used, accessing the Symantec Management Platform at various places in it will automatically prompt the user to install the ActiveX control in question.
Additional Troubleshooting
Other browser issues can cause this too. For example:
- Other locked down permissions, especially from a GPO.
- The user changing scripting settings and other browser settings.
- Other third party plugins and applications installed into the browser, such as toolbars, search bars, etc.
Resetting the browser may or may not resolve the above issues, but comparing its settings to a working browser should shed light on what is different, and likely the cause.
