Upon completion of a Simplified System Protection (SSP) enabled backup of Windows 2008, the backup completes successfully, but the ASR writer shows a failed state.
No error listed in job log.
This issue has been observed in Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2008 SBS edition.
Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) requests a file named asr.xml in preperation of the backup. Backup Exec sends a snapshot request to generate the asr.xml and then aborts which causes the ASR writer to go into a failed state.
A hotfix is now available for this issue in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned in this article. Refer to the Hotfix link under Related Documents at the end of this article to obtain the hotfix needed to resolve the issue.
Backup Exec 2012 Rev 1798 Service Pack 3 (TECH205351).
Workaround: Deselect a file/folder from the selection list to run a non-SSP style backup.
SSP Enabled (Note the green "On" verification):
SSP disabled (Note SDR is confirmed "OFF"):
ASR writer reports "Failed" on running SSP enabled backup of Windows 2008 R2 servers.
