Problem
When attempting to backup a virtual machine running Microsoft Windows on an ESX host, the backup may complete with the following exception.
Error
Job log message: V-79-57344-38725 - One or more virtual disks contain volumes that do not support Granular Recovery Technology (GRT). Granular restores cannot be performed for these volumes.
Debug Log will show:
[mounter] - VDiskMounter::MountAllDisks: no drive letter or volume GUID found, volume ignored
[mounter] - VDiskMounter::MountAllDisks: no drive letter or volume GUID found, volume ignored
[mounter] - VDiskMounter::MountAllDisks: no drive letter or volume GUID found, volume ignored
[mounter] - Mount of all disks succeeded
[fsys\ntfs\img_pdi] + img_pdi_attach.cpp (633):
[fsys\ntfs\img_pdi] | Error mounting disk(s): E_IMG_FS_NO_GRT_VOLUMES_FOUND (0xe0009745).
Solution
Workaround: Either disable GRT for the VMware backup or perform a standard RAWS backup of the virtual machine
