Issue



An attempt to restore a complete VM from an Incremental or differential backup set fails reporting the error provided below.


Error



Unable to open a disk of the virtual machine.

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0009585 - Unable to open a disk of the virtual machine.


Cause



This is caused because one of the earlier jobs in the required sequence of full and incremental jobs (or just the full job in the case of a differential) has either failed or been cancelled and then the sequence was not restarted with a full backup.


Solution



A hotfix is now available for this issue in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned in this article. Refer to the Hotfix link under Related Documents at the end of this article to obtain the hotfix needed to resolve the issue.

Backup Exec 2012 Rev 1798 Service Pack 3 (TECH205351).

Backup Exec 2010 R3 Rev 5204 Service Pack 4 (TECH208828).
