Error

Final error: 0xe0000396 - Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup. Review the job log for more information.

V-79-57344-918 - Unable to complete the operation.  The following error was returned when opening the Exchange Database file:  '-546 The log file sector size does not match the sector size of the current volume.'

Environment

Exchange 2007

Backup Exec 2012

Cause

This issue is caused by a disk sector size mismatch between the Exchange server logs drive, and the Backup Exec server staging location.

Solution

Workaround :

Run non-GRT backup of Exchange.

Solution :

A hotfix is now available for this issue in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned in this article. Refer to the Hotfix link under Related Documents at the end of this article to obtain the hotfix needed to resolve the issue.

Backup Exec 2012 Rev 1798 Service Pack 3 (TECH205351).

Important Note: This fix allows Backup Exec to accurately detect the physical sector size of the media server volume used for mounting/staging the Exchange DB.  The subject error may still occur if there is truly a sector-size mismatch between the Exchange server log storage volume and the Backup Exec GRT staging location.   To determine if these locations match, on each of the two servers involved run the following command from a command prompt for the Exchange log storage drive and the Backup Exec staging drive:

FSUTIL FSINFO NTFSINFO x:

where x is the Exchange server drive letter where the logs are stored and the Backup Exec server drive where staging is performed.

This will result in the parameters for the volumes present.  Note the Bytes Per Sector for the drives to be matched up between the servers.  More importantly, note the Bytes Per Physical Sector value which will be present if MS patch 982018 is installed on Windows 2008 R2.  In order of precedence, first the Bytes Per Physical Sector should be compared and matched if present on one or both servers.  If that value is not present on one or both server then the Bytes Per Sector value can be used for the matchup.  Either way, the values must match for Exchange GRT backups and restores to work properly and for the backup jobs to complete without the mismatch error.
