Backup Exec 2012 Revision 1798 Hotfix 206520

Solution

Summary
This hotfix contains a critical fix for the Backup Exec File System and Exchange Archive Options. Note that if neither the File System Archive Option nor the Exchange Archive Option are installed, this hotfix is not applicable.

Affected versions
Backup Exec 2012 revision 1798 32bit Media Servers
Backup Exec 2012 revision 1798 x64bit Media Servers

Prerequisites
- Administrative privileges are required to install this hotfix.

Post requisites
- A full backup is recommended after installing this hotfix.

Issue resolved
- This hotfix resolves a security vulnerability present in the embedded Enterprise Vault code that the Backup Exec Archive Options use.

Installation Procedure:

Note:  This hotfix originates from changes made to the Symantec Enterprise Vault code used for the Backup Exec Archive Option.  Changes to this code require a manual update process detailed below.  Unlike other hotfixes used for Backup Exec, this fix will not use the Microsoft Installer and will not be available via Live Update.

1. Stop all Backup Exec services.  This can be accomplished inside the Backup Exec application by going to the Backup Exec Icon - upper left, selecting Configuration and Settings then Backup Exec Services which will bring up the Backup Exec Services Manager.   Click the Stop all services button and leave the Services Manager open.
2. Once all services have stopped, take a backup copy of "EVConverterSandbox.exe", "ExchangeItemsU.dll" and "StorageRuntime.dll" files, located in the Backup Exec Archive Option installation folder (which by default is C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Enterprise Vault).
3. Make a backup copy of the C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Enterprise Vault\Converters folder.
4. Copy the updated "EVConverterSandbox.exe" and "StorageRuntime.dll", packaged in this hotfix, to the Backup Exec\Enterprise Vault folder, replacing the originals.
5. Copy the files from the \Files\Converters folder packaged in this hotfix, into Backup Exec\Enterprise Vault\Converters, replacing the originals.
NOTE: Do not replace the entire ...\Converters folder with the Converters folder packaged in this hotfix - there are additional files present that do not get replaced.
6. Start all Backup Exec services by clicking the Start all services button in the Backup Exec Services Manager.

Uninstallation instructions:

1. Stop all Backup Exec services as above.
2. Once all services have stopped, take the backed up copies of "EVConverterSandbox.exe", ExchangeItemsU.dll and "StorageRuntime.dll" and replace the hotfixed versions, located in the Enterprise Vault installation folder (which by default is C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Enterprise Vault).
3. Remove the Converters folder from the Enterprise Vault installation folder above.
4. Copy the backed up Converters folder into the Enterprise Vault installation folder.
5. Start all Backup Exec services.
