Issue

Unable to perform a redirect restore of Web Application to the same server farm. The restore job fails if Service Pack 2 of SharePoint 2010 has been applied. The restore job completes successfully without the Service Pack. The target Web Application is disappear from the farm after completion of the restore job.

Error

The restore job fails with the following error with SharePoint 2010 SP2:

0xe000fefe - An error occurred while connecting the restored databases to the Microsoft SharePoint Portal Farm. The portal was not restored.

SharePint server reports the following error when manually attach the database to the same farm:

The attach operation cannot continue because another object in this farm already contains the same ID. Each object in a farm must have a unique ID. In order to proceed with the attach operation you must assign a new ID to this database. To attach this database with a new ID, use the Mount-SPContentDatabase command with the -AssignNewDatabaseId parameter.
Note that if this new database and an existing database contain the same site collections, attaching this database will likely result in orphaned site collections due to conflicts between the two databases.

Environment

Backup Exec 2010 R3 and 2012

SharePoint Server 2010

Cause

This is a limitation of SharePoint 2010. SharePoint 2010 SP2 can report the error message mentioned above.

Solution

If the Web Application has only one Site Collection, perform a redirect restore of the content database. Then, use the Mount-SPContentDatabase PowerShell command with the -AssignNewDatabaseId parameter.

If the Web Application has multiple Site Collection,  use Granular Recovery Technology (GRT.)  GRT can redirect Individual documents to a file path.
