When performing an Oracle backup using Recovery Manager, ORA-27142 is received in the trace log.


Error



ORA-27142: could not create new process


Solution



The problem could be caused by a lack of system resources.

The operating system calls: pipe() and fork(). These are failing because there is a lack of memory and swap available on the system.

The proposed solution is to perform either of the following actions:

1.  Increase swap or memory

or

2.  Reduce the number of shared servers (dispatchers) that can be started

Contact the operating system support organization for further information.
