When attempting to add a vCenter or ESX host to Backup Exec 2012, the error "Incorrect Function" comes up

Technical Solution


When attempting to add a vCenter or ESX host to Backup Exec 2012 the message below is displayed and the vCenter or ESX host cannot be added.


Error Message:

Unable to connect to "VMVCB::\\HOSTNAME\Virtual Center"
Incorrect Function

The beremote debug log will show the following

[fsys\vmvcb]         - VM_VCBPROXY_FS::DisconnectFromVCServer: status = 0X0
[fsys\vmvcb]         - VM_VCBPROXY_FS::ConnectToVCServer: OK, session = 000000000858CC60
[fsys\vmvcb]         - VM_VCBPROXY_FS::buildBrowseTree() Could not load the XML C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data\FILENAME.XML
[fsys\vmvcb]         - VM_VCBPROXY_FS::GenerateVCItemDles() Error while reading the inventory details from VC server 'HOSTNAME'  User:'USER ACCOUNT'
[fsys\vmvcb]         - VM_VCBPROXY_FS::DisconnectFromVCServer: vmcDisconnect session = 000000000858CC60
[fsys\vmvcb]         - VM_VCBPROXY_FS::DisconnectFromVCServer: status = 0X0


This issue is resolved in Backup Exec 2014 or later versions.

To resolve this issue and receive the new Backup Exec improvements please upgrade to the current version of Backup Exec.

(Backup Exec 2012) Remove the annotation from the problem VM or lower the character count. Then attempt to add the vCenter or ESX(i) host.
