Preparation

 
Verify the account name of the Backup Exec service account:

  1. From the Start menu, point to Settings | Control Panel, and then double-click Services
  2. Double-click the Backup Exec Server service
  3. When the Service dialog box appears, click on the Log On tab, and note the user listed in the field This Account. This is the Backup Exec service account login name (Figure 1)

  4. Open Computer management | Local Users and Computers (Non-Active Directory) or Active Directory Users and Computers
  5. In the left pane, select Users
  6. In the right pane, right-click and go to Properties of the Backup Exec service account
  7. Select the Member of tab
  8. Ensure that the Backup Exec service account only belongs to Domain Admin and Administrators (Figure 2)

Verify installation of Exchange components:

  1. Verify that the Exchange agent is installed by going to Help | About Backup Exec
  2. If your Exchange server is different from the backup server (a remote server), then along with checking Help | About Backup Exec, verify that the Backup Exec Remote Agent service is installed on the Exchange server
  3. If you are configuring the mailboxes for Exchange 2000/2003, make sure Exchange 2000/2003 System Manager is installed

 

Grant required rights on the Exchange 2000/2003 Server / verify mailbox permissions:

  1. From the Microsoft Exchange program group, start System Manager
  2. With the Exchange Organization icon highlighted (globe at top left with letter in front), select Action | Delegate Control
  3. This will bring up the Delegation Wizard (Figure 3)

  4. Click Next
  5. The Users and Groups window will appear
  6. Click Add
  7. Click Browse
  8. Highlight the Backup Exec Service account
  9. Click OK
  10. Set the Role (permission level) to Exchange Full Administrator (Figure 4)

  11. Click OK
  12. Click Next
  13. Click Finish
  14. Now expand Servers and locate and expand the server
  15. Expand First Storage Group
  16. Select and go to Properties of the mailbox store (Figure 5)

  17. On the mailbox store Properties page, click on the Security tab
  18. On the Security tab, locate and select the Backup Exec service account in the Name box
  19. In the Permissions box, scroll down to the bottom and select Allow for Receive As and Send As (Figure 6)

  20. From the Administrative Tools or Microsoft Exchange program group, start Active Directory Users and Computers
  21. Click View | Advanced Features
  22. Expand the tree on the left until the Users folder is displayed, then click on it and open it
  23. Select the Backup Exec Service Account from the user list on the right (Figure 7)

  24. Right-click on the account and select Properties
  25. Select the Exchange Advanced tab
  26. Confirm Hide from Exchange address lists is not selected; then select Mailbox Rights (Figure 8)

  27. On the Mailbox Rights window, locate the Backup Exec service account in the Name box. If the account doesn't appear here, add it manually.
  28. Highlight the account
  29. Select Allow for everything except Associated external account (this permission is not necessary) (Figure 9)

  30. Click OK

 

Phase 2: Set up a valid Microsoft Exchange Profile

NOTE: The following steps will be using Outlook. A previous version will also suffice, a profile will still need to be set up.

  • If using Outlook XP, please ensure Microsoft Office XP Latest Service Pack has been installed.
  • Creation of a mail profile is simply to test or initialize the mailbox being used.
  • Per Microsoft Knowledge Base articles KB313889 and KB266418, Microsoft does not recommend installing Exchange 2000 and Outlook 2000 or later on the same computer.
  1. Log on to Windows 2000/2003 using the Backup Exec service account
  2. From the Start menu, point to Settings | Control Panel, and then double-click Mail or Mail and Fax
  3. Click Show PROFILES
  4. Click Add
  5. Click Manually configure information services, and then click Next (Figure 10)

  6. In the Profile Name field, type the name of the Backup Exec service account and click Next
  7. On the Services tab, click Add
  8. Select Microsoft Exchange server from the list of information services, and click OK
  9. On the General tab, enter the name of the Exchange server and the mailbox name for the service account, and click Check Name. The server and mailbox names should become underlined to indicate that the mailbox name has been verified.
  10. Click OK
  11. Click OK again
  12. Choose whether you want to add Exchange (or Outlook) to the Startup group, and then click Next
  13. Click Finish
  14. Click Close
  15. Open the email client using the new profile

NOTE: If the email client did not start with the newly created profile, click Tools | Options | General (Mail Services tab in Outlook 98) and click Prompt for a profile to be used. Alternatively, click Always use this profile and select the newly created profile from the drop-down list. Click OK to save the new setting. If backing up multiple Exchange sites and using different global address lists, the previous steps must be performed for each site to be backed up.

If Backup Exec and Exchange are installed on the same server, skip to Phase 3.
Provided the phases above have been followed, the following steps are a true test of your new Backup Exec service account Exchange profile:

  1. In Outlook, select the File drop down menu
  2. Go to Open | Other user's folder. The following screen appears (Figure 11):

  3. Click on Name
  4. Select a mailbox other than the Backup Exec mailbox (Figure 12)

  5. Click OK
  6. Click OK again. The inbox for the selected mailbox will be displayed.

 

Phase 3: Select mailboxes to be backed up

  1. From the Backup Exec program group, start Backup Exec
  2. Select the Backup Selections tab
  3. If Microsoft Exchange is installed on the same machine as Backup Exec, the Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes icon will be displayed under the Drives branch. Otherwise, the Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes icon will be displayed under the Entire Network branch.
  4. Double-click on the Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes icon (Figure 13)

  5. Backup Exec will prompt with Please enter a unique mailbox name. Enter the mailbox name used to create a profile in phase 2 (Figure 14).

  6. Select the individual mailboxes to back up and create the backup job by clicking the Backup icon on the toolbar
