Issue

The retirement process for Symantec Mobile Management for Microsoft® System Center Configuration Manager (SMM for SCCM) will begin on June 2, 2014. As of this date, there will be no additional feature enhancements to SMM for SCCM. On December 1, 2014, Symantec will cease sales of new product and subscription licenses for SMM for SCCM, though existing customers may continue to renew their licenses until June 1, 2015, when SMM for SCCM will no longer be available for renewals. Support for this product will continue until June 6, 2016, when it will reach the End of Support Life.

This decision to retire the SMM for SCCM product was made because Symantec is consolidating our mobile product offerings into a stronger, simplified, and more integrated Enterprise Mobility solution for our customers. Symantec is focused on delivering App Center as our next-generation integrated mobility solution, with core-integrated functions including: Mobile Device Management (MDM), Mobile Application Management (MAM), and Mobile Threat Protection (Mobile Security).

Solution

Though Symantec will retire SMM for SCCM, we will continue to sell the Symantec Mobile Management Suite (without SMM for SCCM) and the following products within the Suite, which are separate from SMM for SCCM:

  • Symantec App Center
  • Symantec Mobile Security
  • Symantec Mobile Management for Symantec Management Platform (SMM for SMP)

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

  • The Symantec Mobile Management (SMM) for Microsoft® System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) product provides mobile device management (MDM) capabilities that extend and enhance the native MDM capabilities included in the native Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) platform.
  • Mobile device platform operating systems supported by SMM for SCCM include Apple iOS™, Google Android™, Microsoft® Windows Mobile and Microsoft® Windows CE.
  • The Symantec Mobile Management Suite will be adjusted to remove the SMM for SCCM product beginning June 2, 2014

KEY DATES

  • End of Life (EOL) = June 2, 2014 (SMM for SCCM EOL start date, end feature enhancements)
  • End of New Acquisition = December 1, 2014 (Last date that new SMM for SCCM product and subscription licenses may be sold)
  • End of Availability = June 1, 2015 (Last date that product and subscription licenses for SMM for SCCM can be renewed)
  • End of Limited Support = December 7, 2015 (End of limited technical support for SMM for SCCM)

CONSIDERATIONS FOR EXISTING CUSTOMERS

All SMM for SCCM license entitlements and associated technical support entitlements will ultimately be migrated to App Center Basic Edition on or before the final End of Support Life date. We are not immediately migrating licenses in order to ensure that your existing entitlements, support and any new licenses/renewals purchased will stay on SMM for SCCM. You may request a license transfer from SMM for SCCM to App Center Basic Edition by contacting your Symantec sales representative or Customer Support.

If you are a customer using iOS or Android, the Symantec App Center Basic Edition product offers many of the same MDM features as SMM for SCCM, particularly with respect to iOS and Android-based BYOD mobile devices. If you are a customer using SMM for SCCM to manage legacy Windows Mobile and/or Windows CE-based devices, we suggest that you begin migrating your license entitlements in the second half of 2015, at which point Symantec plans to have incorporated both operational device features and Windows Mobile/Windows CE management into App Center’s MDM capabilities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

Q: Why is Symantec discontinuing SMM for SCCM?
A: We pay attention to wider mobility market trends so that as new devices and related mobile operating systems change, we are prepared to support your mobility evolution. In addition, as we align with our new offering strategy and efforts to streamline our product range to provide fewer, more integrated solutions for our customers, this requires us to retire products from our portfolio. As a result, Symantec has made the decision to discontinue SMM for SCCM and focus on enhancing the Symantec App Center platform to deliver a unified solution to protect apps, data, and devices, including Mobile Device Management (MDM), app wrapping (MAM), and mobile threat management (Mobile Security) capabilities.

Q: Is discontinuing SMM for SCCM a part of Symantec’s current strategy?
A: The decision to discontinue SMM for SCCM in favor of focusing our investment on the Symantec App Center platform is consistent with Symantec’s strategy to deliver “Right for me” customer-focused productivity solutions that solve your biggest, higher-order problems.

Q: With this announcement, is Symantec also discontinuing the Symantec Mobile Management for Symantec Management Platform (SMM for SMP) and Symantec Mobile Management (standalone- SMM) offering?
A: No. This announcement does not involve discontinuing the Symantec Mobile Management (SMM) products that are built on the Symantec Management Platform. This product, also sometimes referred to as simply “Symantec Mobile Management” or “SMM,” is not involved with this announcement. It is only the Symantec Mobile Management for Microsoft® System Center Configuration Manager (SMM for SCCM) product that is being discontinued at this time.
