II. DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEMS FIXED
=================================

With this NetBackup 4.5 DAR special pack, NetBackup can use
Direct Access Recovery (DAR) during NDMP restores, for NDMP
hosts that support DAR. DAR can greatly reduce the time it
takes to restore files.

Without DAR, NetBackup reads the entire backup image, even if
only a single restore file is needed. For a large NDMP host,
the backup image can be tens or even hundreds of gigabytes in
size. Reading an image of that size can take hours. DAR enables
the NDMP host to position the tape to the exact location of the
requested file(s), reading only the data needed for those files.
Restore times can be reduced from hours to minutes.

DAR is enabled by default (no configuration required). For each
restore, NetBackup automatically determines if the use of DAR will
shorten the duration of the restore. NetBackup activates DAR only
when it will result in a faster restore.

NetBackup DAR can be turned off with a manual override. The override
disables DAR on all NDMP restores, for each NetBackup media server
on which the override is configured. This may be necessary if you
are having problems with DAR and your NDMP host is an older machine
or is not running the latest NAS version.

=============
Restrictions
=============

- After the DAR special pack is installed on NetBackup 4.5 maintenance
pack 1, the DAR feature can be used when restoring backups that were
made by NetBackup 4.5GA or later. Starting with NetBackup 4.5GA, NetBackup
stores the required DAR offset information on each backup, in anticipation
of the DAR feature in this special pack.

NOTE: For backups made by pre-4.5GA versions of NetBackup, restores cannot
use DAR, because the pre-4.5 versions did not store the DAR offset
information.

- For this 4.5 maintenance pack, DAR can be used when restoring files,
but not when restoring directories.

- Backups must have been performed with the NetBackup catalog set to binary
mode. For backups made with the catalog set to ASCII mode, restores cannot
use DAR, because ASCII mode did not store the required DAR offset information
on each backup. Note that all backups made prior to NetBackup 4.5 used ASCII
catalog mode.

- To use DAR with NetBackup, the NDMP host you want to restore must support
DAR. Some NDMP host vendors do not currently support DAR.

====================
Troubleshooting DAR
====================

In certain situations, one of the following messages may appear
in the bptm log on the NetBackup media server
(if the bptm log is enabled).

Message:
DAR DISABLED - Number of paths n > DAR_MAXIMUM_FILE_LIST_COUNT x

Explanation:
The number of files being restored is greater than the maximum
allowed (default is 1024). You can either select fewer files for
the restore, or increase the DAR maximum file list count.
(Increasing the maximum is not supported by some NDMP host vendors.)

To increase the DAR maximum file list count, place a
"DAR_MAXIMUM_FILE_ LIST_COUNT x" entry in the following
file and specify x as a number greater than 1024.

On UNIX:
    /usr/openv/netbackup/db/config/ndmp.cfg

On Windows:
  <install_path>\NetBackup\db\config\ndmp.cfg

Message:
DAR DISABLED - not supported by NDMP host

Explanation:
The current NDMP host does not support DAR.

Message:
DAR DISABLED - unable to retrieve DAR info

Explanation:
DAR information is not available for the file.

Message:
DAR DISABLED - Backup performed prior to NB 4.5

Explanation:
After the DAR special pack is installed on NetBackup 4.5 maintenance
pack 1, the DAR feature can be used when restoring backups that
were made by NetBackup 4.5GA or later. Starting with NetBackup 4.5GA,
NetBackup stores the required DAR offset information on each backup,
in anticipation of the DAR feature in this special pack. For backups
made by pre-4.5GA versions of NetBackup, restores cannot use DAR,
because the pre-4.5 versions did not store the DAR offset information.

Message:
DAR DISABLED - NDMP host did not provide DAR info during backup

Explanation:
The backup was performed with an NDMP host version that does not
support DAR. Ask the NDMP host vendor if a later NAS software
version is available that supports DAR.

Message:
DAR DISABLED - Optimal DAR parameters exceeded for this image size

Explanation:
NetBackup determined that the restore would take longer with DAR than
without it.

Message:
DAR DISABLED - Directory DAR not supported

Explanation:
DAR is automatically disabled when a restore job specifies a directory
to restore. DAR can be used when restoring files, but not when restoring
directories.

Message:
DAR DISABLED by DAR config file

===================
How to Disable DAR
===================

If restores with DAR are failing or having other problems,
add "NDMP_DAR_DISABLED" (without quotes) as a separate line
in the ndmp.cfg file on the NetBackup media server:

On UNIX:

  /usr/openv/netbackup/db/config/ndmp.cfg

On Windows:

  <install_path>\NetBackup\db\config\ndmp.cfg

When NDMP_DAR_DISABLED is added to the ndmp.cfg file, the
following appears in the bptm log (at all levels of verbosity,
starting with 0). Note that the bptm log must be enabled.

  DAR DISABLED by DAR config file

Explanation:
The ndmp.cfg file contains "NDMP_DAR_DISABLED." See
"How to Disable DAR" and "How to Re-enable DAR," below.

=====================
How to Re-enable DAR
=====================

Remove the NDMP_DAR_DISABLED line from the ndmp.cfg file.

========================================
Performance Enhancement for Remote NDMP
========================================

Remote NDMP allows data on an NDMP host to be backed up to a
storage device that is connected to a NetBackup media server.
This NetBackup 4.5 maintenance pack increases the number of
buffers used during NDMP backup and restore from 4 to 16, and
includes an option for adjusting the number of buffers if
necessary. Prior to this 4.5 maintenance pack, the number of
buffers was set to 4 and could not be changed. The new default
of 16 is automatically in effect and requires no manual setting.
This higher default significantly improves remote NDMP performance.

To further increase the number of buffers, use the new buffers option
on the ndmpmoveragent.start script (UNIX), or the NDMP Mover Agent
service (Windows).

On UNIX:
  /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/ndmpmoveragent.start  -buffers <N>

where N is the number of 63k buffers to be used during the backup
or restore. N can be from 4 to 64 (default is 16). For a man page
description of the other options available on the ndmpmoveragent.start
script, refer to the NetBackup for NDMP System Administrator's Guide.

For buffers larger than 16, you must increase max shared memory.
It takes 16 buffers per MB shared memory.  Therefore, 64 buffers require
4MB shared memory.  This is done by changing the shmsys values in /etc/system

For example, to allow for max of 4 MB, add the following line:

set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4194304

Then reboot.

See Solaris user guide for more info.

On Windows:
Go to the Windows Services dialog and stop the NDMP Mover Agent service.
In the Properties dialog for the NDMP Mover Agent service, in the
"Start parameters" field, enter "-buffers" (without quotes) followed
by the desired number (4 to 64). For example:

  -buffers 24

Click the Start button in the Properties dialog to restart the service
with the new setting.

===============================
III. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
===============================

The DAR special pack must be installed on systems running NetBackup 4.5
maintenance pack 1. NetBackup 4.5GA and NetBackup 4.5 maintenance
pack 1 do not contain the DAR feature.

--------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: This DAR special pack applies to NetBackup 4.5 maintenance
pack 1 only; it cannot be installed on NetBackup 4.5 maintenance
pack 2.
---------------------------------------------------------------

If you install this DAR special pack on maintenance pack 2, some of
the fixes in maintenance pack 2 will not work. On the other hand,
if you install this DAR special pack on maintenance pack 1 and then
install maintenance pack 2, the DAR feature will be lost.

Therefore, to obtain the fixes included in maintenance pack 2 while
retaining DAR, you must install NetBackup 4.5 Feature Pack 1
(when available).  Feature Pack 1 will include DAR and all fixes included
in any previously released 4.5 maintenance packs (such as 1 and 2).

If you have installed the DAR special pack on maintenance pack 1 and
want to upgrade to maintenance pack 2 without DAR, you must uninstall
the DAR special pack from maintenance pack 1 and then install
maintenance pack 2.

For Unix or NDMP Server:
========================
As root on the NetBackup/NetBackup NDMP master server:

1) If you are running remote NDMP, stop the remote NDMP process by running:

  /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/ndmpmoveragent.stop -noremove

2) Install special pack binaries.

        cd /tmp
        /bin/sh Vrts_pack.install

3) Restart the remote NDMP process.

For Windows/NT Server:
======================
1) If Remote NDMP is installed and running, please stop the service by running:

  <install_dir>\volmgr\bin\installndmpmoveragent.exe -r
  (i.e. C:\Program Files\VERITAS\volmgr\bin\installndmpmoveragent.exe -r)

  OR

  Stop the "NDMP Mover Agent" service in the Window's Services window in
  the Control Panel.

2) Run Setup.exe (Double-click on the icon from File Manager or Explorer or run
  it from the command prompt)

  Setup.exe begins by stopping the appropriate NetBackup Services required for
  the special pack installation. Next, it will install the necessary files
  into their correct locations. Lastly, Setup.exe will restart the appropriate
  NetBackup services.

3) Restart the remote NDMP process.

===========================
IV. UNINSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:
===========================

For Unix or NDMP Server:
========================
Note:  This will ONLY uninstall the special pack from your local machine.

1) Close the NetBackup user interfaces.

  Make sure the NetBackup server has no active jobs running (for
  example, backups, restores, or duplications).

  If a database agent is being used, such as Oracle,
  ensure that the database services are stopped.

2) If you are running remote NDMP, stop the remote NDMP process by running:

  /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/ndmpmoveragent.stop -noremove

3) Change directory to the pack save directory.
  Substitute the pack name for ${PACK.EN_US} in the following command:

      cd /usr/openv/pack/${PACK.EN_US}/save

4) Run the un-install script:

    ./Vrts_pack.uninstall

5) Verify that the pack uninstalled successfully by checking
  /usr/openv/pack/pack.history.

6) If update_clients was run after the pack was originally INSTALLED,
  run it again after that pack is successfully UNINSTALLED.

7) If necessary, restart the NetBackup and Media Manager daemons:
  /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies/netbackup start

8) Restart the Remote NDMP process.

For Windows/NT Server:
======================
To remove NetBackup for DAR on Windows from your system:

1) Close all NetBackup Windows.
  Make sure the NetBackup server has no active backups, restores,
  duplications, etc., running. If there are NetBackup activities in process,
  the DAR Pack will not uninstall if the file to update is busy.

  If a database client is being used, such as Oracle, ensure that the
  database services are stopped.  Database services can be stopped via the
  ControlPanel -> Services tool.  Repeat this until all databases have been
  stopped. These services must be restarted once the pack is successfully
  installed.

2) If Remote NDMP is installed and running, please stop the service by running:

  <install_dir>\volmgr\bin\installndmpmoveragent.exe -r
  (i.e. C:\Program Files\VERITAS\volmgr\bin\installndmpmoveragent.exe -r)

  OR

  Stop the "NDMP Mover Agent" service in the Window's Services window in
  the Control Panel.

3) Goto <install dir of NetBackup>\Patch\Pack_Uninstaller.exe and double-click
  on the executable.
  (i.e. C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Patch\Pack_Uninstaller.exe)

4) Select the NB_45_1_S0703 pack to be uninstalled.

5) Click on Uninstall.

6) You may review the trace file
  (<install dir of NetBackup>\Patch\Pack_Uninstall.log) to see what
  files were replaced.

7) Restart the remote NDMP process.
