How to configure backup jobs to send notification using Backup Exec 9.x, 10.x, 11x, 12x and 2010 (includes SMTP configuration)

Solution

Notifications can be configured to send recipients a message when certain events occur within Backup Exec. The methods in which Backup Exec will notify are as follows:
  • Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI)
  • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
  • Net Send
  • VIM (Lotus Notes)
  • Pager Notifications
The method that is to be used to notify the recipient must be defined before notifications can occur. Printer and Net Send notification methods do not require pre-configuration.

After configuring the notification method, the next step is to create recipients that will be notified of an alert. The recipient can then be assigned to an alert category, which defines what events an alert should occur for.

The following examples show how to configure SMTP notification so that a user will be notified that a backup job is complete.
