Problem
Why do some files under the MDBDATA folder not appear in the restore selection interface even after a successful backup of the MDBDATA folder?
Solution
By design, Backup Exec for Windows Servers will exclude Exchange database files(.stm , .edb files and .log files) under the MDBDATA folder from backup selections when Exchange services are running (This kind of backup is called ONLINE BACKUP and it done using Exchange Agent ).Backup Exec will skip all the contents of the MDBDATA folder without giving any warning or error message and restore selection will not show any files are under MDBDATA folder.
The following Information is generated in the successful backup job log of the MDBDATA folder:
If we want to backup the contents of the MDBDATA Folder then all the Exchange services have to be stopped (This kind of backup is called OFFLINE BACKUP or FLAT FILE BACKUP ) and during the backup Exchange services would unavailable .
Note: Backup Exec 9.x, 10.x,11.x,12.x, 2010 for Windows Servers uses the Active File Exclusion feature to exclude the Microsoft Exchange Server flat-files from the file system backup. This prevents the "in use - skipped" errors on the .edb, the .stm, and the .log files.
