How to use OEM drivers with Backup Exec for Windows Servers

Solution

Backup Exec (tm) for Windows Servers can be used with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) drivers if the tape device is not listed in the compatibility list of the product.

Note: For the tape device to work with Backup Exec when the OEM drivers are used, it is important that backup and restore operations are successful using the native backup utility of Windows (NTBACKUP).

The device can be configured using the OEM drivers during installation of Backup Exec. Select Do not use VERITAS device drivers when configuring the tape device drivers (Figure 1).

  • The tape device can also be reconfigured within Backup Exec. Refer to these steps:

1. Run Backup Exec, select Overview in the main menu bar of Backup Exec
2.  In the Configuration or Wizards menu, select Device Configuration Wizard (Figure 2)

Note: The tape device can also be configured using Tools | Wizards | Device Configuration Wizard from the main menu bar in Backup Exec (Figure 3)

3.  A Welcome screen will be displayed. Click Next.
4.  The tape device will not be seen in the Detected Hardware screen. Click the Configure Devices button, and select Click here to install VERITAS device drivers to configure your tape drive (Figure 4).

5. Click Next to proceed with the configuration wizard
6. On the next screen, select Use VERITAS tape drivers for tape devices that do not already have drivers loaded (Figure 5)

Note: Symantec does not recommend nor will support device drivers that are not explicitly listed in the Hardware Compatibility List. Users may try using them at their own risk.
