Problem
Unable to perform Sony or Spectralogic robotic library operations with Backup Exec for Windows Servers 9.x and above
Error
Robotic library hardware error.
The robotic library has reported a general hardware error condition. Manual intervention, calibration, etc., may be required. This may be a device related hardware problem, or it may be some other hardware problem (i.e. SCSI card/bus etc).Final error: 0xe000820a
Solution
When attempting to perform any operation, such as an
inventory, erase, label media, backup, restore, or catalog, the library does not
appear to function correctly, and an alert appears stating that the library has
reported multiple "hardware" errors (Figure 1).
Figure 1
The error occurs when the media attempts to mount and dismount correctly. Backup Exec (tm) contains a registry key that allows this device to correctly mount and dismount media.
To enable this functionality, do the following:
1. Quit Backup Exec
2. Start BEUtility (located by default in C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT or C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec) and select the Backup Exec media server
3. Under Services Tasks, select the option to Stop Services
4. Start REGEDT32
Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
5. Browse to HKey_Local_Machine | Software | VERITAS | ADAMM or HKey_Local_Machine | Software | SYMANTEC | ADAMM
6. Change the value of Enable Robotic Library Tape Device Release from 0 to 1 (Figure 2)
Figure 2
7. Quit REGEDT32
8. In BEUtility, under Services Task, select Start Services
