How to test SQL connectivity within a Backup Exec 9.x and 10.x Shared Storage Environment

Solution

When troubleshooting Backup Exec (tm) for Windows Servers Shared Storage Option (SSO), verifying SQL connectivity is a critical component in making sure the environment is configured correctly.

To do so, log on to the secondary server within the Shared Storage Environment as the Administrator account. Then perform the following:

1.  For Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Windows XP, click Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Data Sources (ODBC)
For Windows NT 4.0, click Start | Settings | Control Panel | Data Sources (ODBC)

2.  Select the System DSN tab

3.  Click Add

4.  In the Create New Data Source window, select SQL Server, and click Finish

5.  A window will be displayed: Create a New Data Source to SQL Server. For Name, enter Test.  Leave Description blank. For Server, select the Backup Exec Media Server. Click Next once this information is correctly entered (Figure 1)

6.  Select With Windows NT authentication using the network login ID and then click Next (Figure 2)
