How to delete the VM_VXISIS.LOG file created by VERITAS Enterprise Administrator (tm) for Windows

Solution



The VM_VXISIS.LOG file records the activities, functions, and interactions of the VxSvc component of VERITAS Enterprise Administrator. This file is often needed by technical support personnel to troubleshoot issues that may occur related to Volume Manager, Volume Replicator, and Storage Foundation for Windows.

Depending upon the trace level of logging selected, this file can grow quite large (see the Related Documents section below for information on setting the trace level). Additionally, other Windows components may interact with VxSvc, contributing substantially to an increase in size. It is recommended to review the cause for the increased size of the log file as there may be an environment variable causing excess logging.

If the file has grown disproportionately and resources are being compromised, the file may be periodically purged by means of a script. To implement the workaround, VERITAS Enterprise Administrator 3.0.2.264 or higher must be installed. Previous versions of VERITAS Enterprise Administrator would place a lock on the file preventing it from being modified or removed while its service is running.

To purge the log file and reset it to a 0 KB size, create a script as follows:

1. Navigate to Start | Run
2. In the Open: box,  type Notepad and click OK. A blank Notepad document will open.
3. Within the Notepad document, type:
echo File purged by script > "C:\Program Files\Veritas\Veritas Volume Manager 5.0\logs\vm_vxisis.log"
4. Click File and select Save As
5. In the Save as type box,  select All Files
6. In the File name box, type vm_vxisisdelete.cmd  and click Save
7. Close the Notepad window

This script can now be executed immediately or can be automated through a batch or command file, and can be scheduled to run at a specified interval using the Windows Task Scheduler. Issuing an ECHO to the file is the preferred method of cleaning the log as this is less intrusive to the logging of Enterprise Administrator. If desired, a delete command may be issued instead of the echo command, such as:

del "C:\Program Files\Veritas\Veritas Volume Manager 5.0\logs\vm_vxisis.log"

Please note, You need to recycle the vxvm services "Veritas Storage Agent" service" which it will cause the cluster to trigger a failover.

They can be restarted from Windows Services, or by running the following commands:

net stop vxvm
net start vxvm
