General guidelines on recovering from disk failure in a VERITAS Volume Replicator Replicated Data Set

Solution



In general, the following cases can occur:

On the Primary:

Data Volume disk Failure:
  • Primary RVG will go to FAIL state.
To recover:
  • Rectify the disk error.
  • Reactivate the volume.
  • Start the primary RVG.

SRL Volume Disk failure:
  • RVG will go to passthru mode and Rlink will be detached.
To recover:
  • Rectify the disk error.
  • Reactivate the volume.
  • Dissociate the SRL from the RVG.
  • Associate it back.
  • Use checkpoint restore, if backup and checkpoint available.
  • Otherwise attach with autosync.

On the Secondary:

Data Volume disk failure:
  • Secondary and primary RLINK fail flag is set.
To recover:
  • Rectify the disk error.
  • Reactivate the volume.
  • Use checkpoint restore, if backup and checkpoint available.
  • Otherwise detach and attach with autosync.

SRL Volume Disk failure:
  • Secondary RVG goes to FAIL state and passthru mode.
  • Rlink secondary paused, secondary log error flags are set.
To Recover:
  • Rectify the disk error.
  • Reactivate the volume.
  • Dissociate the SRL from the RVG.
  • Associate it back.
  • Start the RVG.
