DOCUMENTATION: What is the nbsupport utility and where can it be found? (Note: With more current versions of NetBackup the nbsupport utility is replaced by NBSU.)

Solution

Note:  In more current versions of NetBackup the "nbsupport utility" has been replaced with "NBSU".  For more information about NBSU, please refer to the following:
 http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/303813

The nbsupport utility is an internally developed Symantec utility for troubleshooting NetBackup (tm) problems.  It collects a fairly comprehensive set of system information, from networking information to system logs to NetBackup version information, which allows support engineers to gain a better insight into the systems being troubleshot.  With the broad scope of what the utility collects, it permits the engineer to take a step back, and review things which are unlikely to be the root cause, but could still be contributing to the core problem.  The utility is not installed, it is merely uncompressed into a directory, and then an executable is run.  It then collects the various information, compresses it into a single file, which can be forwarded on to the Symantec support team.  It can be helpful in establishing a base line of information relative to a particular system.

A link to the most current version of the nbsupport utility can be found in the Related Documents section below.

Additionally, newer versions of NetBackup contain the utility, so it may not be necessary to download it.
