AOFO: Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). VSS Snapshot error. Unexpected provider error.

Cause

1 . AOFO option under Job Properties is not selected.

2 . The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider Service manages software based volume shadow copies taken by the Volume Shadow Copy service. If this service is stopped, software-based volume shadow copies cannot be managed. If this service is disabled, any service that explicitly depends on it will fail to start.

 3. Error would be reported in job log if there are more than one VSS providers installed on the Source server.

Solution

The error occurs while running a backup job with selections made for a local or remote Windows 2003 machine from under the Shadow Copy Components irrespective of whether Advanced Open File Option is installed on the Backup Exec server or not.

Solution 1 :

Make sure that 'Advanced Option File Option ' is selected under Job properties >>> Advanced Open File Option .  If it is selected , try and select the ' System -  Use microsoft Shadow copy provider ' under snapshot provider.  As most of the time thats the default snap shot provider for  win 2003 server and later

Solution 2 :
This error occurs while backing up a Windows 2003 machine with selections made from under the Shadow Copy Components and the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service is stopped or disabled.

While configuring a backup job to back up a Windows 2003 machine with selections made from the Shadow Copy Components, it should be ensured that the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider Service and the Volume Shadow Copy Service are running.

Note: By default, Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider Service is set to "Manual", This service gets started whenever the "Shadow Copy Components" backup is initiated. If the service can not start successfully then "Reboot" the server once and test the backup. If the Shadow Copy service fails to start, please contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.

For Microsoft Windows Server 2003 machines, install following Microsoft patch and Reboot the Server:

Furthermore, open command prompt on the problematic server and check the status Snapshot Writers available with the following command,

vssadmin list writers

Furthermore, open command prompt on the problematic server and check the Snapshot Providers available with the following command,
