Issue

It is impossible to complete Recovery Solution Cluster creation on poor WAN connection due to the timeout error.

Environment

Applies to Recovery Solution 6.2.2760. This is a common problem with centralized Notification Server where Recovery Solution Server along with it storage and database reside on a remote site behind a slow line. Attempt to create an Recovery Solution Cluster usually fails with a timeout error in such case.

Cause

Poor WAN connection (slow line) usually causes this issue. The attached hotfix has the Cluster Creation process redesigned. Reworked design will also become a part of the release after Recovery Solution 6.2 SP2.

Solution

Download and unpack the hotfix files. Instructions how to apply the files follow.

A. Replacing the Altiris.RecoverySolution.dll:

Instructions how to apply it follow. They should be performed on the Notification Server box where Recovery Solution is installed.

  1. Download the package and extract the updated Altiris.RecoverySolution.dll to any location on the hard drive.
  2. Stop the following services using "Services" in Control Panel:
    • Altiris Service
    • Altiris Client Message Dispatcher
    • IIS Admin
    • World Wide Web Publishing Service
    • HTTP SSL
  3. Run the following command: Start > Run > subst P: c:\windows\assembly (replace the P drive letter with any other if needed and C drive letter to a different system drive letter if needed).
  4. Go to folder called P:\GAC\Altiris.RecoverySolution\<version number>. You should see an existing Altiris.RecoverySolution.dll there.
  5. Create a subfolder called "backup" and copy (do not move it) the existing Altiris.RecoverySolution.dll to it.
  6. Copy the updated Altiris.RecoverySolution.dll over the old one in P:\GAC\Altiris.Recovery Solution\<version number>.
  7. Restart the services
    • Altiris Service
    • Altiris Client Message Dispatcher
    • IIS Admin
    • World Wide Web Publishing Service
    • HTTP SSL

B. Replacing the Altiris.RecoverySolution.UI.dll:

  1. Close the Altiris Console if it is opened.
  2. Browse to \Program Files\Altiris\Recovery Solution\Console\bin.
  3. Create a backup folder under \Program Files\Altiris\Recovery Solution\Console\bin and copy (don't move) the existing Altiris.RecoverySolution.UI.dll there.
  4. Copy the new .dll over existing one in \Program Files\Altiris\Recovery Solution\Console\bin.

C. Updating the ASPX files:

  1. Close the Altiris Console if it is opened.
  2. Browse to \Program Files\Altiris\Recovery Solution\Console\ClusterWizard.
  3. Create a backup folder under \Program Files\Altiris\Recovery Solution\Console\ClusterWizard and copy the existing ASPX files there.
  4. Copy the new ASPX files over existing ones in \Program Files\Altiris\Recovery Solution\Console\ClusterWizard.

D. Applying the new Solution_Ent.config

  1. Browse to \Program Files\Altiris\Recovery Solution\Console\Config.
  2. Create a backup folder under \Program Files\Altiris\Recovery Solution\Console\Config and copy the existing Solution_Ent.config file there.
  3. Copy the new file over existing one in \Program Files\Altiris\Recovery Solution\Console\Config.
  4. Run the Notification Server Log Viewer (Start > Programs > Altiris > Diagnostics > Altiris Log Viewer).
  5. Do the Start > Run > cmd <enter> to run the command line prompt.
  6. Run the following command:

    c:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\bin\AexConfig /configure "c:\Program Files\Altiris\Recovery Solution\Console\Config\Solution_Ent.config"

  7. Check the Notification Server Log that there are no errors logged during the execution of the configuration script. If any exceptions are logged please double check all the steps of this section. If the problem persists please contact support.
  8. Wait till the command line prompt is shown again in the cmd.exe window. That will mean that configuration script has completed. Please be patient as it may take several minutes to run. This will reconfigure the Recovery Solution Solution settings in the Notification Server.

Now are can retry with the Recovery Solution Cluster creation.
