Poor catalog backup performance associated with catalog backup written to remote file systems such as Network File System or Common Internet File System

Solution

Symantec NetBackup (tm) does not support saving catalogs to a remote file system such as Network File System (NFS) or Common Internet File System (CIFS).

The binary format of the catalog results in critical performance issues if saved to a remote filesystem. Network-based I/O using random I/O operations (read, write, delete) into a binary file format catalog are not recommended as NFS performance with binary file formats are known to be poor. Poor NFS performance should be expected when using the binary catalog and this is an attribute of NFS performance and not NetBackup.
