How to register or unregister the Veritas Volume Shadow Copy Service provider with the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service in Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows

Solution

When the Veritas Volume Shadow Copy Service (VxVSS) provider is registered with the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), backup software may use VxVSS instead of the standard Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider.

VxVSSProvider.exe can be used to register or unregister VxVSS with VSS (Figure 1).

Figure 1 - VxVSSProvider Commands

Command Description
vxvssprovider /service Registers the Veritas provider from VSS
vxvssprovider /unregserver Unregisters the Veritas provider from VSS
vssadmin list providers Lists the providers that are registered with VSS (Figure 2)

To unregister the Veritas VSS Provider:

1. From Windows Services, stop the "Veritas VSS Provider" service.

2. From a command prompt, run the following command:
vxvssprovider /unregserver

To register the Veritas VSS Provider:

Note: These steps assume that the Veritas VSS Provider is not currently registered.

1. From a command prompt, run the following command:
vxvssprovider /service

2. From Windows Services, start the "Veritas VSS Provider" service. If it is already started, stop it and then restart it.

To unregister and "re-register" the Veritas VSS Provider:

1. From Windows Services, stop the "Veritas VSS Provider" service.

2. From a command prompt, run the following commands:
vxvssprovider /unregserver
vxvssprovider /service

3. From Windows Services, start the "Veritas VSS Provider" service. If it is already started, stop it and then restart it.

To generate a list of VSS providers:

1. From a comment prompt, run the following command:
vssadmin list providers

This generates a list of VSS providers (Figure 2).
