Solution

To resolve this issue, clear either the Exchange server selection under Shadow Copy Components\User Data or the selection for Microsoft Information Store.

  • Backups and restores using the Exchange Writer on Windows Server 2003 are not interchangeable with backups and restores using the Exchange Agent.
  • Exchange Agent cannot be used to restore a backup made with the Exchange Writer, and vice versa.
  • Data must be restored using the method you used to back it up.
  • Additionally, the two different methods cannot be mixed.
For example, Exchange Writer cannot be used to perform a full backup and the Exchange Agent used to perform a differential backup at the same time.
  • However, the different methods can be used at different times.
For example, a combination of full and differential backups can be scheduled using the Exchange Agent during the week, full backups can be scheduled using the Exchange Writer on Saturday.

Symantec recommends using the Exchange Agent when:
  • A comprehensive data protection scheme is required (full, differential, incremental, and copy)
  • Backing up an individual database
  • The database is configured in a cluster or using Network Attached Storage
  • The database is large and very active
·

If the database does not meet any of the above requirements, use either the Exchange Writer or the Exchange Agent.
