vxsvc dumps core due to memory allocation failure

Solution

VERITAS has discovered an issue with the VERITAS Enterprise Administrator service daemon, vxsvc, where it could allocate memory faster than the AIX operating system can free memory, and eventually fails to allocate additional memory.  In such cases, vxsvc will terminate and dump core. If vxsvc is involved in a multi-step operation such as FlashSnap, manual intervention may be required to recover from the error. Please contact VERITAS Technical Services for help with manual intervention.

This problem can only occur if all of the following conditions apply:

1. VERITAS Enterprise Administrator Service (VRTSob and/or VRTSobgui) version 3.2.514.16 is installed (these software packages are included in VERITAS Storage Foundation 4.0).

2. The operating system is AIX 5.1 or 5.2

3. A command that causes vxsvc to dump core is issued through Enterprise Administrator, VxDBA Menu Utility and/or the VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle GUI

Customers with large configurations (e.g. 50+ volumes) running FlashSnap operations (e.g. dbed_vmsnap and dbed_vmclonedb) are most susceptible to this issue.

Recommended Course of Action

1.  Verify the version of VRTSob and VRTSobgui on your AIX systems.  If the version is 3.2.514.16:

# lslpp -l VRTSob VRTSobgui
 Fileset                      Level  State      Description
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Path: /usr/lib/objrepos
 VRTSob                  3.2.514.16  APPLIED    VERITAS Enterprise
                                                Administrator Service
 VRTSobgui               3.2.514.16  APPLIED    VERITAS Enterprise
                                                Administrator Service

Path: /etc/objrepos
 VRTSob                  3.2.514.16  APPLIED    VERITAS Enterprise
                                                Administrator Service

then go to step 2

2.  Install the VRTSob and VRTSobgui patches included in the "Download Now" link below

a.  Download VEApatches_271296.tar.Z by clicking on the "Download Now" link below

b.  Extract the software packages from the compressed file:

# zcat VEApatches_271296.tar.Z | tar xf -
# cd VEApatches

c.  If vxsvc is installed and running:

# /opt/VRTSob/bin/vxsvc -m
Current state of server : RUNNING

stop it:

# /opt/VRTSob/bin/vxsvc -k
Request is in process..
VEA Server is shutting down  ...........

# /opt/VRTSob/bin/vxsvc -m
Current state of server : NOT RUNNING

d.  Install the patches:

# installp -a -d ./VRTSob.bff VRTSob
# installp -a -d ./VRTSobgui.bff VRTSobgui

# lslpp -l VRTSob VRTSobgui
 Fileset                      Level  State      Description
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Path: /usr/lib/objrepos
 VRTSob                  3.2.514.17  APPLIED    VERITAS Enterprise
                                                Administrator Service
 VRTSobgui               3.2.514.17  APPLIED    VERITAS Enterprise
                                                Administrator Service

Path: /etc/objrepos
 VRTSob                  3.2.514.17  APPLIED    VERITAS Enterprise
                                                Administrator Service

e.  Restart vxsvc if it was running in step 2c:

# /opt/VRTSob/bin/vxsvc
