How to change the default size of Backup To Disk files in Backup Exec 12.x and above

Solution

By default, Backup-to-Disk (B2D) files are 4 Gigabyte (GB) in size. It is possible to change the default B2D file size but there are several things that should be considered. If the B2D files are too small, that could cause a performance problem. If the B2D files are too large, there could be file system limitations or memory allocation problems.

There are very few reasons why the default B2D file size would need to be altered; only change the B2D file size if absolutely necessary.

For Local B2D Files:

For local B2D files, the main limitation of the size of the B2D file is the file system. It is possible that there could be memory allocation problems for very large files but it is more common to see memory problems when the B2D files are stored across the network.

Common file system limitations:
FAT32 - Maximum file size is 4 GB.
NTFS - Maximum file size is 16 TB.

For Remote/Network B2D Files:

If B2D files are stored across a network, it is recommended to keep the default setting of 4 GB. The reason the default setting of 4 GB is recommended is because the larger the B2D files are, the more likely there will be network or memory allocation problems. If the default size has to be increased, make changes in small increments (4 to 10 GB) and always perform a test backup, catalog, and restore to verify if the new settings will work properly.

NOTE:  If a network attached storage (NAS) device is emulating Windows, and is not truly a Windows operating system, please confer with the NAS manufacturer for assistance before creating B2D folders on the NAS device. Symantec does not certify NAS devices, and if the operating system is not a true Windows operating system, Symantec cannot properly troubleshoot the issue because the operating system is a proprietary operating system.

To change the default size of B2D files, perform the following steps:

1. In the Backup Exec console, on the Device tab, right-click on the B2D folder as shown in the figure below and click Properties (Figure 1)

2. On the B2D Properties screen, the default the size is set to 4 GB (Figure 2).

3. Once the B2D file size has been changed, click Apply and then click OK.

NOTE: If the default B2D file size is changed, it is strongly recommended that a test backup, catalog, and restore are performed to make sure there will not be any problems.
