When inventorying an HP SSL1016 robot, the inventory fails with error 204: "Unable to initialize robot." Errors in the application log also indicate a "cannot clear slot" error.

Error

robot inventory failed: Unable to initialize robot (204)

Solution

When utilizing the autoclean feature of the robot, a slot is reserved by the robot for cleaning purposes and may present an error in VERITAS NetBackup (tm).

The error is seen during inventory (Figure 1):

A "cannot clear slot" error is also seen in the Event Application logs for slot 16 (Figure 2). This indicates that the previous error isn't a communication issue, but rather an issue with the slot configuration:

In cases where this has been encountered, it has been necessary to disable autoclean to allow the inventory process to clear slot 16 and complete successfully. With the slot being identified as a normal slot, it will be necessary to configure cleaning to be done by NetBackup. Please refer to the NetBackup Media Manager System Administrator's guide for more details on cleaning tape configuration in NetBackup.
