Problem
How to move a user archive between Vault Stores in Enterprise Vault for Microsoft Exchange
Solution
Note: These steps only apply to Enterprise Vault 6.0 SP2 and higher.
Option 1: Move archive where the Active Directory Account/Exchange Mailbox doesn't Exist
In some situations, it may be necessary to move an archive that mailbox/active directory account that has been deleted between Vault Stores. To accomplish this task the archived data must be exported from the current (source) archive and imported into a new (destination) archive on a different Vault Store.
- Create a new Active Directory account with a Exchange Mailbox.
- Create a new Vault Store in the Enterprise Vault Administration Console (VAC)
a. In the left pane of the Administration Console, expand the Enterprise Vault site hierarchy until Vault Stores is visible.
b. Right-click Vault Stores and then click New > Vault Store. The New Vault Store wizard starts.
c. Work through the wizard. The following information will be need:
- The computer hosting the Storage service that the vault store is to use.
- The name of the vault store.
- The SQL server that is to create and manage the vault store database, and the locations for the database files.
- When safety copies are to be removed from the archiving target.
3. Run the provisioning Task and enable on the Enterprise Vault Server in the Enterprise Vault Administration Console (VAC)
a. In the VAC, expand Enterprise Vault Servers, <Vault Server Name.domain> and select Tasks
b. Right click on the Exchange Provisioning for the domain and select <Run Now>.
c. Select <Normal Mode> and click <Next>.
d. Wait for the status to change from "Processing" to "Running"
4. Enable the new account in Enterprise Vault Administration Console (VAC)
a. In the VAC, click on <Tools> then <Enable Mailboxes>
b. Select the appropriate Exchange Server and click <Next>
c. Find the new account and click <Next>
d. Click <Change>
e. Click <Change> next to Vault Store
f. Select the vault store created above and click <OK> twice.
g. Click <Next> three time and then <Finish> then <Close>
5. Use the Export utility to export the items from the archive to PST
a. In the VAC expand the <Site container>.
b. Right click on the <Archives> container and click <Export>.
c. In the Export Archive Wizard select <Export a single archive to a chosen mailbox> and click <Next>.
d. Select <List all available archives> and click <Next>.
e. From the list select the archive that is to be moved and click <Next>
f. Select <List all available mailboxes> and click <Next>
g. Select the user created in step 1 and click <Next>
h. Select <Export all items> and click <Next> twice.
i. Once the Export finished, click <Next> then <Finish>
6. Delete the old Archive in Enterprise Vault Administration Console (VAC)
a. In the VAC, expand <Archives> then select <Exchange Mailbox>
b. Right click on the old archive on the right side and select <Delete>
c. Click <Yes> to confirm the deletion of the archive.
d. The Archive status will say "Marked for deletion
Note: It may take several days for an archive to disappear from the list depending on its size.
Note: The Active Directory Account and/or the Exchange Mailbox that was create for in step 1 can be deleted at this time.
Option 2: Exporting to a PST
In some situations, it may be necessary to move a user archive between Vault Stores or Vault Sites. To accomplish this task the archived data must be exported from the current (source) archive and imported into a new (destination) archive on a different Vault Store.
1. Use the Export utility to export the items from the archive to PST.
a. In the VAC expand the Site container.
b. Right click on the Archives container and click on Export.
c. In the Export Archive Wizard select Export Archive to PST and click Next.
d. Select List all available archives and click Next.
e. From the list select the archive that is to be moved and click Next.
f. Select Export all items and click Next.
g. Enter a valid folder path and click Next.
h. Click Next on the remaining dialog boxes to select the default settings and complete the wizard by clicking Finish.
i. Copy the PST and the CFG file to the target Vault server. Note: The CFG file is required for the import.
2. Disable the user via the Vault Administration Console (VAC) by using the Disable Mailbox Wizard.
a. Open the VAC and click on Tools then click on Disable Mailboxes.
b. In the Disable Mailbox Wizard select the Exchange server where the user account is located from the drop down list then click Next.
c. Select List all available mailboxes and click Next.
d. Select the mailbox from the list then click Next.
e. Click Finish.
3. Launch the Enable Mailbox wizard to enable the mailbox that was disabled in Step 2.
a. Open the VAC and click on Tools then click on Enable Mailboxes.
b. In the Enable Mailbox Wizard select the Exchange server where the user account is located from the drop down list then click Next.
c. Select List all available mailboxes and click Next.
d. Select Show Disabled mailboxes only and choose the mailbox from the list.
e. Click on Deselect Archive, then click Next.
f. Click on Change then click on Change beside the Vault Store and select the new vault store and click Next.
g. Choose the appropriate settings on the remaining dialog boxes and complete the wizard by clicking Finish.
4. Run the PST Import Wizard to migrate the exported data into the new archive on the new Vault Store.
a. In the VAC expand the Site container.
b. Right click on the Archives container and click on Import.
c. In the Import Archive Wizard select the destination Vault Store and click Next.
d. Click Add to browse for the PST file that was created in Step 2 and click Next.
e. Choose the Select an archive for each PST radio button and click Next.
f. Select the appropriate Retention Category and click Next.
g. Select the Destination archive and Associated Mailbox for the user and click Next.
h. Select the appropriate Retention Category and click Next.
i. On the shortcut option window choose the No radio button to avoid duplicate shortcuts and click Next.
j. On the folder structure window select the root folder and Merged options and click Next.
k. Leave the default settings on the remaining boxes and click Close to complete the wizard.
